Description: The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor of Aboriginal Literatures. The position will commence August 15, 2010, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of English currently offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree program with a major in English. An honours option begins in Fall 2010. In addition, the Department delivers writing instruction at all levels including a foundation writing course in Mount Royal’s General Education program and courses in technical and creative writing. Department members also teach a range of introductory and senior literature courses.

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching/service pattern has a focus on teaching and service only. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.

Mount Royal University is located in Calgary, Alberta on the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy and Treaty 7 communities. The University currently has approximately 500 aboriginal students enrolled in various college programs. A Center of Excellence for Aboriginal Studies is being created and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to play a role in setting the Centre’s research and pedagogical directions. In addition to teaching a senior course in Aboriginal literatures, the Candidate will teach writing and literature courses in both the Department of English and the College’s Aboriginal Education Program.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will ideally possess:
• Demonstrated commitment to the teaching of writing at the postsecondary level
• Expertise in the transmission of Aboriginal literatures from one generation to another
• Knowledge about Aboriginal and Indigenous peoples’ literature including Aboriginal ways of knowing and interpreting this knowledge
• Knowledge of a First Nations language. Since Mount Royal University is located in Calgary Alberta on the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy and Treaty 7 communities, knowledge of the Blackfoot language or another of the Treaty 7 languages will be a distinct advantage
• A commitment to service
• A completed MA in English or related discipline is required. Individuals working towards PhD completion are encouraged to apply
